METABOLIC AND NUTRITION DISEASES
OBJECTIUS

– To understand the biological and pathophysiological processes leading to the development and progression of liver diseases, including steatosis, steatohepatitis, and cirrhosis.
– To identify new therapeutic targets and develop innovative pharmacological approaches.
– To advance the development, validation, and implementation of precision medicine in hepatology, with a direct impact on clinical practice.

The Liver Research Unit investigates the biological and pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the development and progression of liver diseases, ranging from the initial stages of steatosis and steatohepatitis to advanced stages such as cirrhosis. The group works to gain a better understanding of these processes, aiming to generate knowledge that contributes to improving patient diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

The research combines basic, translational, and clinical approaches to identify new therapeutic targets, develop innovative pharmacological strategies, and drive the implementation of precision medicine in hepatology. This work is carried out in close collaboration with specialists in clinical hepatology, liver surgery, and systems biology, facilitating the transfer of knowledge into clinical practice.

– Regulation of hepatic microcirculation under physiological conditions and in chronic liver disease.
– Intercellular communication during the progression and regression of chronic liver diseases.
– Transcriptional regulation of hepatic endothelial genes and phenotypic characterization of endothelial cells in portal hypertension, ischemia-reperfusion, cirrhosis, and aging: signaling pathways and associated therapies.
– Sinusoidal mapping in disease states and aging.
– Identification of biomarkers associated with sinusoidal capillarization.
– Identification of diagnostic biomarkers for therapeutic response.
– Integration of clinical and translational studies to validate biomarkers, vasoprotective therapies, and diagnostic tools in patients with chronic liver disease.
– Multidisciplinary projects in collaboration with clinical hepatology, liver surgery, and systems biology to study acute and chronic liver injury.
