NEUROSCIENCES AND MENTAL HEALTH
OBJECTIUS

Advancing the understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms involved in the development, deterioration and recovery of the nervous system through clinical and preclinical models, with the aim of improving intervention, prevention and treatment strategies for neurological, psychiatric and painful disorders.

It is about contributing to the improvement of public health through the development of new strategies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of neurological, psychiatric and pain disorders, generating applicable knowledge that can reduce the social, economic and health burden associated with these pathologies.

Specific objectives

Analyse the mechanisms of neurotoxicity and their effects on developmental disorders and neurodegenerative processes in preclinical models, in order to identify therapeutic targets and biomarkers.

Evaluate the effectiveness of early probiotic interventions in preclinical models, examining their effects on neuromotor maturation and the prevention of behavioural and cognitive deficits.

To study the psychobiological and psychopharmacological effects of psychedelic substances and other compounds of interest, as well as their therapeutic potential in the treatment of addictive disorders in animal models.

Identify and characterize altered inhibitory neuronal circuits in preclinical ALS models, with the aim of better understanding motor dysfunction and exploring possible intervention pathways.

Identify environmental factors that contribute to the development of myofascial pain in preclinical models, to establish correlations between environmental exposures and vulnerability to pain.

Determine the morphofunctional changes associated with different therapeutic interventions aimed at reducing myofascial pain, evaluating its effectiveness and mechanisms of action in preclinical models.

To explore the effects of transcranial stimulation by direct electric current (tDCS) on post-stroke rehabilitation, analyzing its impact on neuronal plasticity and functional recovery.

Promote the transfer and dissemination of the knowledge generated through scientific publications, participation in congresses, dissemination activities and interdisciplinary collaborations, facilitating that the results of the research reach the scientific community, health professionals, policy makers and society in general.
