Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Platform – IRB CatSud Training Unit
Introduction:
Practical introductory course to R and RStudio to learn how to work with data from scratch: organizing a project, writing basic code, importing data, performing simple transformations, and generating initial results and visualizations.
No prior knowledge of programming or statistics is required. The course duration is 10 on-site hours, divided into 4 sessions of 2 h 30 min (from 14:30 to 17:00).
Objectives:
● Learn how to work with RStudio and run code independently.
● Understand basic data structures and apply simple operations.
● Import, review, and transform data to answer simple questions.
● Create basic plots and export results.
● Build a solid foundation to continue with data analysis courses using R.
Contents:
● Installation and basic configuration of R and RStudio
● Projects, code, and good organizational practices
● Objects, data types, and basic structures
● Importing data in common formats
● Basic data manipulation: selecting, filtering, sorting, and summarizing
● Initial data visualization with simple plots
● Exporting results and preparing a brief final exercise
Programme:
● Session 1 – Tuesday, June 2, 2026, 14:30-17:00: Installation, RStudio environment, projects, scripts, objects, and basic operations.
● Session 2 – Thursday, June 4, 2026, 14:30-17:00: Data types, vectors, data tables, file import, and initial review.
● Session 3 – Tuesday, June 9, 2026, 14:30-17:00: Data manipulation: selecting variables, filtering cases, creating variables, and summarizing.
● Session 4 – Thursday, June 11, 2026, 14:30-17:00: Basic plots, exporting results, and final integrative exercise.
