Research carried out by investigators from the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Catalunya Sud (IRB CatSud), the CIBER CIBERobn network (Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de la Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y Nutrición) and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) has focused, within the framework of a study published in the scientific journal Andrology, on diet quality in relation to sperm quality. The study concluded that men who regularly consume nuts have better sperm quality.

The study worked with a sample of up to 222 healthy men aged between 18 and 40 years who were participants in the international project called Led-Fertyl. This was a cross-sectional study focused on dietary and lifestyle factors related to semen quality. To analyse the relationship between nut consumption and sperm quality, the researchers collected detailed information on the participants’ eating habits through validated nutritional questionnaires and compared it with the results of their semen analyses, the clinical test used to assess parameters such as sperm concentration, count, and motility.

Participants with a higher consumption of nuts were less likely to show abnormalities in sperm motility, one of the factors that may affect male fertility. More specifically, the research team points out that men who consumed one portion per day were 75% less likely to present sperm motility problems and had a 69% lower risk of having any abnormality in their semen analysis.

Acting without sufficiently considering the consequences, making hasty decisions or being carried away by emotions of the moment are some of the behaviours associated with impulsivity. In the past, several studies have linked this psychological trait to unhealthy habits, such as tobacco consumption, harmful substances and unhealthy foods, among others. It has also been associated with mental health problems and poorer overall health status. However, there was no clear scientific evidence in older populations without any diagnosed psychiatric disorder.

Now, a research team from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Catalunya Sud (IRBCatSud) and the Biomedical Research Networking Centre for the Pathophysiology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBEROBN) has demonstrated that following a low-calorie Mediterranean diet, engaging in physical activity and receiving behavioural support reduce impulsivity. The results have been published in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, one of the scientific publications with the greatest international impact in the fields of psychology and psychiatry.

The team analysed data from 306 participants in the PREDIMED-Plus-Cognition study, which evaluates cognitive status and other factors related to the mental health of participants in the PREDIMED clinical trial. Volunteers were randomly assigned to two groups: one followed an intensive programme aimed at increasing adherence to a slightly calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet, increasing physical activity and reinforcing these changes through behavioural support; the other received only general recommendations to follow a Mediterranean diet. Impulsivity was assessed at the beginning of the study and during the three years of follow-up through personality questionnaires and cognitive tests.

Significant behavioural changes

After three years, participants who had followed the intensive lifestyle programme showed a significant reduction, between small and moderate, in impulsivity levels compared with the control group. More specifically, they improved impulsive personality traits, reducing tendencies such as acting without thinking about the consequences. Even more relevant was the change in their behaviour, as they improved their ability to make sound decisions, learning to prioritise long-term benefits over immediate rewards.

“This is the first time it has been shown that a multimodal intervention can regulate impulsivity in older adults, potentially helping to prevent the development of future chronic diseases,” states Carlos Gómez Martínez, postdoctoral researcher at Helse Vest and the University of Bergen (Norway). For Jordi Salas-Salvadó, Professor of Nutrition at the URV and co-leader of the study together with Gómez Martínez, adopting healthy habits not only improves physical health, but also promotes more reflective decision-making: “It could facilitate the maintenance of other healthy behaviours in the long term, contribute to preserving psychological well-being and foster a greater capacity for self-regulation.”

The study was carried out by researchers from the Human Nutrition Unit of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Catalunya Sud (IRBCatSud) and the Biomedical Research Networking Centre for the Pathophysiology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBEROBN). The research is part of the PREDIMED-Plus study, developed by several groups within the CIBER of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, and has received funding from the European projects Eat2BeNice and PRIME, as well as from various competitive projects of the ISCIII.

What a woman eats during pregnancy not only affects her own health, but also her child’s future development. In particular, the quality of carbohydrates in the diet —that is, how they affect blood sugar levels— may play a key role in children’s cognitive and motor development.

This is one of the main conclusions of two studies involving IRB CatSud, which suggest that diets with a higher impact on blood glucose levels are associated with poorer outcomes in different areas of child neurodevelopment.

Not all carbohydrates act in the same way in the body. Some cause rapid increases in blood glucose, while others do so more gradually. This difference is measured through the glycemic index and glycemic load. In general, fresh, fiber-rich foods —such as fruit, vegetables, legumes, or whole grains— have a more moderate effect, whereas more refined products tend to trigger faster responses.

In one of the studies, more than a thousand pregnant women and their children were followed during the first years of life. The results indicate that a higher intake of carbohydrates with elevated glycemic index and load during pregnancy is associated with lower scores in language and motor skills in young children.

A second study, with longer follow-up into the preschool stage, reinforces these findings. In this case, differences were observed in aspects such as processing speed, non-verbal skills, and visuomotor coordination depending on the quality of carbohydrates consumed during pregnancy.

The consistency between both studies highlights the need to pay greater attention to this factor in nutritional recommendations for pregnant women. Beyond the amount of carbohydrates, researchers emphasize the importance of prioritizing those with a gentler impact on blood glucose, with the aim of supporting optimal brain development from the earliest stages of life.

This research involved teams from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and IRB CatSud, among other institutions, within the framework of mother–child cohort studies.

 

An international study finds epigenetic signals — chemical modifications that regulate gene activity without altering DNA, often influenced by environmental factors such as pollution or stress — associated with bipolar disorder, a mental illness characterised by extreme mood changes, alternating depression and euphoria, which could help to develop more accurate clinical prediction tools.

The study, published in the scientific journal EBioMedicine under the title DNA methylation signatures associated with bipolar disorder in peripheral blood improve prediction models, represents the largest meta-analysis on epigenetics in bipolar disorder carried out so far at an international level. The participation of researchers linked to the Hospital Universitari Institut Pere Mata (HUIPM) and the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Catalunya Sud (IRB CatSud, formerly IISPV) has been especially relevant, as they have provided their own sample of participants, one of the 12 that have contributed to the study. The research has also included the participation of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) and the team from the Consorci Sanitari del Maresme — both integrated into the national network Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Salud Mental (CIBERSAM) — and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).

The research analysed a sample of 3,476 people in total — of whom 1,729 had the disorder and 1,747 were healthy — aged between 16 and 53 years, with 56% women, coming from 12 international samples from different countries. The objective was to identify epigenetic changes associated with bipolar disorder.

Among the most important results, the research team identified 47 regions with epigenetic modification associated with the diagnosis of bipolar disorder and, among these, several are genetic regions involved in processes related to neurotransmission, immune response and cell regulation. In addition, the study also shows that polymethylation scores, which are epigenetic indicators that integrate multiple chemical marks in DNA that can activate or deactivate genes, combined with current genetic models, can improve the predictive ability for bipolar disorder, especially in bipolar disorder type I.

“These results reinforce the idea that epigenetic factors, which are more influenced by environmental factors, can provide additional information to genetics (which is more stable) and contribute, in the future, to the development of useful biological indicators for diagnosis, as well as for clinical decision-making in mental health,” says Elisabet Vilella, one of the researchers involved in the study.

The study has also involved research centres and universities from Europe, North America and Australia, within a large international collaboration under the framework of the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium Bipolar Disorder Working Group.

The publication represents a new recognition of research driven from the region in the field of psychiatry and mental health, and consolidates the position of the participating centres as references in translational research and biomedical innovation.

This week, from June 15 to 18, Montbrió del Camp hosts the 43rd International Symposium on Diabetes and Nutrition (abbreviated as DNSG from the English initials of the organizing body, Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group), which is currently chaired by Hana Kahleova, from the United States. This symposium is a global meeting point for research in diabetes and nutrition and at the local level, this year, it involves the participation of the Southern Catalonia Biomedical Research Institute – IRBCatSud and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV).

The aim of this symposium is to share knowledge regarding research in nutrition, diabetes and the prevention of chronic diseases. It should be noted that the DNSG group is a reference when it comes to developing recommendations on nutrition at the European level and based on diabetes. “That DNSG 2026 is being held in our region and has reached full capacity is magnificent news for our scientific and healthcare institutions”, highlights the organizing committee, made up of the Vice-President of the Symposium and member of the local organizing committee of the congress Jordi Salas; the director of IRB CatSud, Joan Vendrell; and the professor of Nutrition and Food Science at the URV Nancy Babio.

This edition, on the other hand, features a record number of 118 scientific presentations, which address aspects to be considered in the fields of obesity, diabetes and precision medicine, among many other topics.

One of the elements that makes this edition stand out is the collaboration of a local Scientific Committee made up of representatives from the main Spanish scientific societies and research networks related to diabetes, nutrition, obesity and metabolic health. Another relevant factor is that, among the most prominent scientists participating in the congress, is Dr. Frank Hu, Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Harvard University.

A research study based on the analysis of genetic data from hundreds of thousands of people has identified previously hidden genetic links between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and several cardiometabolic diseases, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. These findings, published in the prestigious scientific journal Molecular Psychiatry, help explain why people with autism have a higher risk of developing physical health problems throughout their lives.

The study was carried out by researchers from the Hospital Universitari Institut Pere Mata (HUIPM) and the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Catalunya Sud (IRB CatSud, formerly IISPV), in collaboration with the University of Oslo, and with the participation of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV).

The results show that some of the same genetic factors that influence autism are also involved in metabolic disorders, such as weight gain and diabetes, and in the same direction. This suggests that there are shared biological mechanisms linking mental health and physical health. However, when cardiovascular health factors such as blood pressure are analysed, the relationship is more complex. In these cases, the same genetic factors may have opposite effects, suggesting that different and still poorly understood mechanisms are involved.

Researchers have also identified more than one hundred regions of the genome involved in these connections, opening up new ways to better understand how the brain and the body interact.
“More and more evidence shows that mental health and physical health cannot be understood separately, and this type of study brings us closer to more personalised medicine that takes into account all the factors influencing people’s health,” says Gerard Muntané, first author of the article.

Experts highlight that these results could help, in the future, to detect physical health risks in people with autism earlier and to design more effective prevention strategies.

A study of 746 older people followed for six years identifies a “microbial signature” associated with this dietary pattern and more favourable cognitive ageing

Following a Mediterranean diet not only benefits the heart and metabolism, but could also help preserve cognitive function as ageing progresses. This is according to research led by the Rovira i Virgili University (URV), the IISPV and CIBERobn, which shows how this dietary pattern is associated with a healthier gut microbiota and slower cognitive decline in older adults with overweight or obesity and metabolic syndrome.

The study, published in the journal BMC Medicine, analysed data from 746 older adults at high cardiometabolic risk, who were followed for six years. The research team assessed adherence to the Mediterranean diet, the composition of the gut microbiota and the progression of cognitive function over time. The results indicate that those who most faithfully followed this dietary pattern had a more favourable gut microbiota and a more positive cognitive trajectory.

One of the most innovative aspects of the work is the identification of a “microbial fingerprint” characteristic of the Mediterranean diet. This new biomarker, based on the presence and abundance of certain gut bacteria associated with this type of diet, is also linked to slower cognitive decline. According to the authors, this finding provides new clues about the biological mechanisms that explain the benefits of the Mediterranean diet on the brain.

Cognitive function includes abilities such as memory, attention, learning, language and decision-making, which are essential for maintaining autonomy in everyday life. In parallel, the gut microbiota is composed of trillions of bacteria that are involved in key processes such as digestion, immunity and the production of substances that influence the body’s functioning. In recent years, research has revealed the existence of the so-called gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication system through which intestinal microorganisms can produce compounds that reach the brain and affect its functioning.

“Aquest estudi demostra que la microbiota intestinal és una peça clau en els beneficis cognitius de la dieta mediterrània”, explica Jiaqi Ni, primera autora del treball i investigadora predoctoral de la URV. “Els nostres resultats suggereixen que alguns bacteris intestinals associats a una major adherència a aquest patró alimentari podrien protegir davant del deteriorament cognitiu”.

En la mateixa línia, el catedràtic de la URV Jordi Salas-Salvadó, director de l’estudi, destaca que “identificar una empremta microbiana associada a la dieta mediterrània obre noves oportunitats per dissenyar intervencions nutricionals o microbianes orientades a promoure un envelliment cognitiu saludable”. A project led by the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Catalunya Sud (Southern Catalonia Biomedical Research Institute – IRB CatSud, formerly IISPV) and Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) will assess the current situation of nutrition research in Asia, identifying the main gaps and needs in this field. This work is supported by a 5,000 dollar grant from the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS).

With this funding, the IUNS ACTIVATOR team will work over the next four years to evaluate nutrition research, reflect on how it matches regional priorities, and explore its impact on public health policies. The project will also focus on encouraging efforts to produce relevant scientific evidence at regional level, aiming to improve people’s health through mentoring and the involvement of key stakeholders.

 “Carrying out this study is important because Asian countries are still underrepresented in global scientific literature. It is essential to identify their needs in the field of nutrition to understand whether research in Asia is ready to face its specific challenges, especially during a nutritional transition and the growing burden of non communicable diseases,” says Sangeetha Shyam, IISPV URV researcher, involved in the IUNS ACTIVATOR project: ‘Asian Decadal Nutrition Assessment, Reflection and Activation of Efforts for the Future’.

The project team includes 26 researchers from 13 countries in Asia and Europe, with expertise in nutrition, meta research and scientific communication. Another goal of the study is to involve young researchers to ensure the relevance and long term sustainability of the proposed solutions.

A study from URV, with participation from IISPV, compares abdominal ultrasound with magnetic resonance imaging and shows the potential of this technique to detect early risk of prediabetes and metabolic syndrome in people with abdominal obesity

The distribution of body fat, especially the fat accumulated in the abdomen, is a key factor in the risk of developing metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. However, not all abdominal fat has the same impact on health: subcutaneous fat, located under the skin, does not carry the same risks as visceral fat, which is stored deeper and can come into direct contact with vital organs. Identifying which type of fat is more predominant in a person is essential to assess metabolic risk and to guide clinical interventions. In this context, a study led by researchers from the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), with the participation of research staff from the IISPV, analysed how useful and reliable abdominal ultrasound can be for measuring visceral fat, compared with magnetic resonance imaging, which is currently considered the reference technique.

In clinical practice, the risk associated with abdominal fat is usually assessed by measuring waist circumference. However, this simple method is limited because it cannot distinguish between subcutaneous and visceral fat. Imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography provide this information with high accuracy, but they are expensive, require specialised equipment, and are not easily available in primary care. To explore more accessible alternatives, the research team aimed to validate the use of abdominal ultrasound to characterise fat distribution. “Ultrasound is available in most primary care centres and hospitals, and with trained health professionals it allows real-time imaging at a very low cost,” explains Claudia Jiménez-ten Hoevel, researcher at the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the URV and co-author of the article.

The key question was how similar the results of ultrasound could be to those of magnetic resonance imaging when analysing abdominal fat. To answer this, the team worked with a sample of 113 adult volunteers with abdominal obesity, living in Reus and nearby areas. All participants underwent both a magnetic resonance imaging scan and an abdominal ultrasound within a short period —between three and four days— to ensure comparable results.

A valid and accurate tool

The results of the study, published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, show that visceral fat measurements obtained through ultrasound had good agreement with those obtained through magnetic resonance imaging. However, the researchers also found some limitations of ultrasound when measuring subcutaneous fat, something that previous studies had already suggested. “The main conclusion is that ultrasound can be especially useful when the goal is to identify visceral fat, which is the type most clearly linked to metabolic risk,” says Anna Pedret, researcher from the same department. This potential adds to the fact that ultrasound is easy to use for trained staff and is available in most health centres.

Visceral fat: an indicator of metabolic risk

The analysis also allowed the researchers to explore whether the amount of visceral fat measured by ultrasound could predict future metabolic problems. The results show a relationship between high levels of visceral fat and the presence of prediabetes —a condition where blood sugar levels are high but still below the threshold for type 2 diabetes— as well as metabolic syndrome —a group of risk factors that increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease.

More specifically, the study identifies a level of visceral fat above which the risk of associated diseases increases significantly. For example, a thickness of 7.35 centimetres or more is linked to a higher risk of prediabetes, while from 5.77 centimetres there is a relationship with the probability of metabolic syndrome. These findings highlight the potential of ultrasound as an exploratory tool: “Including abdominal ultrasound in routine clinical practice, especially in nutrition and primary care, could improve risk assessment and allow more personalised interventions,” the researchers explain.

The research group Nutrició Funcional, Oxidació i Malalties Cardiovasculars (NFOC-SALUT) from the URV and the Institut d’Investigació Sanitària Pere Virgili (IISPV) continues working to promote the use of ultrasound as an affordable, fast, and easily applicable technique in clinical practice. The team is now studying the impact of abdominal fat distribution in other population groups and its relationship with different health conditions, such as cognitive function or sarcopenia. In this context, the group is carrying out new studies using abdominal ultrasound in people aged 60 to 74, with ongoing research and open participation. This tool gathers detailed nutritional information on 850 products from 42 brands available in the main supermarkets in Spain. Its aim is to provide dietetics, nutrition, paediatrics and other health professionals with a reliable and updated source of information about the composition of these foods. This allows them to accurately assess nutrition during the first years of life and offer recommendations that promote a healthier and more sustainable diet. In addition, the results can serve as a basis for designing more effective food and regulatory policies.

According to Nancy Babio, researcher at the Human Nutrition Unit of the URV and coordinator of the project, “this database is a key step to provide health professionals with objective and evidence‑based information, in a context where the offer of commercial products for young children is growing quickly and does not always follow public health criteria”.

The results of the analysis, published in the scientific journal European Journal of Pediatrics, show worrying data. Besides confirming that only 20% of the products analysed meet all the nutritional profile and advertising criteria recommended by the WHO, it also warns that 60% of the food contains excessive amounts of sugar, and 99% of fruit purées would require a “high in sugar” warning label. In fact, none of the foods analysed should be advertised according to WHO guidelines.

The analysis also shows that 30% of the products include added sugars or sweeteners, such as honey or concentrated juices, and that none of the products meet all the WHO criteria for commercial promotion. Moreover, 98% display unauthorised claims or promotional messages.

“These results highlight the urgent need to improve regulation, both in the formulation and in the advertising of foods aimed at young children. At the moment, this is governed by a co‑regulation code (PAOS) that is not legally binding and has not worked as expected,” warns Roser Martí, president of CODINUCAT.

The Baby & Toddler Food Composition Database – InfantBase is a tool designed both for professional use and for political decision‑making.

This tool is part of the PRINUT project (Early Childhood: Nutritional Analysis and Regulation of Commercial Foods), which is aligned with public health strategies aimed at promoting healthy and safe eating during early childhood, following WHO recommendations and the PAAS (Comprehensive Plan for Health Promotion through Physical Activity and Healthy Eating) of the Government of Catalonia.

“As scientists and health professionals, we believe we have the responsibility to translate scientific evidence into effective policies that protect children’s health. We hope to receive institutional support to move forward in this direction,” concludes Babio.
